Submission Page 

Instructions: Respond to the prompt in either prose or poetry. You may submit one of each, but you will not place in both categories. Do not include any identifying information in your submission. Submit the appropriate forms found to the right. There is one for poetry, prose, identifying information, and one just for your email and name so we can add you to the email list for updates. You must submit ALL relevant forms to be considered. We did it this way to ensure that judging remains completely anonymous. We will not know who wrote what until we choose the winning pieces.

You must be college aged to be eligible for the contest. Gap year students between high school and college are eligible as well. 

​

Prose:

  • Must be 250-700 words. 

  • Will be judged based on relationship to the prompt, grammar, language usage, and creativity. 

  • Examples: essay, personal story, reflection, short stories, etc. 

 

Poetry:

  • Maximum 250 words 

  • Will be judged based on relationship to the prompt, creativity, and artistry (meter, form, etc).  

  • Can be any kind of poetry you want to write

Prompt: Respond to the following quote from Rav Yosef B. Soloveitchik: “Such a moment in which a man stands confronting abysmal despair and dark desperation -- then, too, must he feel the presence of the Almighty.” - Rav Yosef B. Soloveitchik, On Repentance

1st place winners: $120 and publication in the Jewish Link
2nd place winners: $90

 

Deadline: March 15, 2024

You may choose to have us donate your prize money to one of the organizations listed below, or you may have the prize money in the form of an Amazon gift card.

All winners will have the opportunity to publish their pieces as a blog on Times of Israel.
